"It was a typical wet January
day when on the 15th South West Equine Protection held its first
show of the year at Duchy College, Callington. My trusty
steward and I set out from Kingsbridge in a light mist,
but before arriving in Cornwall the clouds were rolling in.
Despite this the show was well attended with good entries in
most classes. The day started with the In Hand classes in which
several nice animals were entered. The small Mountain and
Moorland winner Mrs Weavers Treflan Maerid was a delight and has
only recently been brought down from the Welsh mountains. Mrs
Chris Horswells superbly turned out Lemonshill Moon Daisy headed
the Coloured class. Eventual In hand champion was Lisa Daveys
charming heavyweight cob Bertie KMA with Barry and Margret
Brooks home bred Corringdon Maestro in reserve. This super
little chap was attending his first outing and must have a
bright future ahead.
By the time the ridden
classes started everyone was looking a bit damp so we abandoned
the lunch break and kept going in order to keep everyone moving.
Again well supported classes with some nice combinations
entered. Louise Henry rode Idyllic Nureyev to head both
the Lead Rein and small breed Mountain and Moorland classes,
this is a new pony for this year and they make a charming
combination; sister Jane Hendy and Spring Contrast headed the
Coloured class whilst Gill Ross' Madrigals Grandee took the
veteran, "Gizzy" is 19 years young now and all credit to Gill he
is still in great condition. Champion of the ridden
section was Marie Laitys lightweight Cob Jack Jones with
reserve going to Paul Jones and the large Hack The Advocate .
About £285 was raised towards
SWEP funds and everyone seemed to go home happy despite the
appalling weather.
Maureen Rolls and her band of
helpers must be thanked for all their hard work and anyone
interested in joining SWEP can contact Maureen on 01822 890668."
