A gala evening!
A DEVOTED horse lover who rescues and cares for injured or neglected ponies on Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor was the first person to be nominated for an award. Maureen Rolls, runs the charity South West Equine Protection on Dartmoor. Yvette Clegg of Plympton, told the Western Morning News that she had decided to nominate Maureen" because of her tireless devotion to these beautiful creatures, our moorland heritage, the ponies and any other horse that has been cruelly treated or needs help". Maureen, who is always on call to take in abandoned ponies to nurse back to health at the charity's yard at Yelverton on Dartmoor, has been vocal in calling or moorland drivers to slow down, after being called out to deal with the casualties of road accidents. Mrs Rolls, who set up her charity eight years ago specifically to help the wild ponies on the moor, will go day and night to an injured animal and summon a vet for emergency assistance, all paid for by SWEP.
