Our Work Continued (Even More Stories)
Updated 10th September 2006
Added 10th September 2006 The pictures are of a Dartmoor foal taken in August 2006 near Tavistock Golf Course.
This foal, and 2 others, are suffering with 'STRANGLES', a highly contagious disease. Owners of the foals were notified and the foals have been left on the Moor but are being monitored by their owners. Vet advised that the foals should stay with the herd which is less stressful and contains the spread to one area.
Strangles has been in this area for 4 years running and so the mares have built up an immunity but the foals are susceptible. Note swelling of abscess under the jaw and mucus from the nose.
Dartmoor filly foal. The foal has a large lump/swelling on the right hind. We are not sure how she got this. The foal is extremely healthy but slightly lame. The owner arrived and a vet attended and decided to leave the foal on the moor as it is less stressful than rounding it up and removing it from the herd. The foal is being monitored and the vet feels that the lump will burst.
