These pictures are of a foal on Dartmoor who was involved in a Road Traffic Accident.  The foal is lame on the offside front leg but luckily the leg is still weight bearing.  The farmer owner has been notified and is monitoring the foal on the Moor with its mother, if it deteriorates the foal will be removed from the Moor.

CARN (Bodmin Moor)

Carn is a 2 year old Colt whose owner and helper tried to halter break him using archaic methods.  This left Carn frightened, confused and afraid of humans.

Traumatised Carn was going to be put down.  SWEP was alerted to his plight and he came into our care.

We are leaving him to settle and gain trust in humans; once we have achieved this we will halter break him using kinder methods.

LEONARD

Leonard suffers with Sweet Itch.  We have kept it under control with the use of a rug and mask to stop the flies and midges.

The rug and mask (Boett Type) but not so expensive are available from:

E-Mail: fiona@icelandichorse.co.uk OR solva@vikinghorse.freeserve.co.uk

We also give him Sweet Itch tablets and apply Aloe Vera Gel to the areas he would rub daily.

(Both Sweet Itch tablets and Aloe Vera Gel are a product of EQUUS Company).

It is essential to prevent Sweet Itch sufferers from itching and prevention is better than cure.  Start early in the year with rug and gel.

This works for Leonard but may not work on all Sweet Itch sufferers.

CONSULT YOUR VET IF YOU ARE NOT SURE OF THE BEST TREATMENT

BODMIN MOOR.  SWEP was called and attended a Grey Mare and Roan Dun.  Both were emaciated and the Roan was also very lame.  SWEP notified a DEFRA Vet and the ponies were removed from the Moor.

Strangely the ponies were removed by an owner that DEFRA and the Commoners were unable to trace or locate.  Subterfuge was used to remove the ponies as no one has owned up to take responsibility.

The Mare had just given birth and was down unable to get up for 1.5 hours, we were not sure she had cleansed.  Consequently the foal had not suckled.  The owner was notified and will keep a regular check on her.
