Murphy (Bay) & Fudge (Dun)                                                                                                                                                                  Murphy

MURPHY - Added 13 July 2006 - Murphy is a Dartmoor colt foal.  Mare was killed in a road traffic hit and run accident.  Farmer found his pony dead in a ditch and could see she had an udder but the foal was not to be seen.

After 7 days of looking the foal was located and removed from the moor.  Farmer asked SWEP to take the foal in.

Murphy is doing well, drinking his mares replacement milk with 'Fudge' another orphaned foal as company.

FUDGE - Added 3rd July 2006 - Fudge is a Moorland filly foal.  SWEP was called out to this foal found running across a busy road, no mare was to be found and no herd within miles.  After all day of calling and panicking and also nearly being hit by a car, we were able to contain the foal.

We then noticed a very large lump, the size of a fist, at the side of the shoulder / neck.  Once at the stables we called a vet to attend, he stuck a needle in the swelling and puss started to come out.  The vet administered a local anaesthetic and used a scalpel to cut the abscess open, what a lot of puss and muck came out.  (The foal also had two swellings from the abscess between her front legs.) The abscess was flushed out with antiseptic, the vet said to continue the treatment for 1 week and leave the abscess to drain.  Treatment is ongoing.

The vet named the foal 'FUDGE'.

Dartmoor Mare (Old).  This mare is emaciated and tired and is obviously not doing very well.  Her owner has been notified and the pony is being monitored to ensure she does not deteriorate any more.

With the September pony drifts this mare will not go back onto the moor again.
