Sophie a mare

5. Difficult Foaling -
Mare made its way to Maureen Roll's house with its foal, still
born and part way out. It had its head and one leg out and the
other leg was compacted against the mare's pelvis. The vet was
called and he sedated the mare and pulled the dead foal out.
The mare ran away once the procedure had finished. Maureen
checked her for the next 2 days, and she looked weak but well.
Couldn't find her on the third. 5 days after the event she was
spotted with the heard, fit and well.

SWEP Rescue \stories:
RTA Mare – Dartmoor January 2009
On
the Yelverton to Princetown road on an extremely dark, cold, and
windy evening this mare was hit by a car that did not stop to
see if she was injured.
Police asked SWEP to attend; sadly the mare had a broken back
leg. A Veterinary was called who euthanised the mare. The
farmer owner removed her from the moor the following day.

Several
complaints of no food / hay and no one ever checking the
ponies. The dark bay was very emaciated and weak; the chestnut
was starting to lose body condition. No owner was traced and
appeared to be possibly gypsy owners.
A SWEP trustee
is calling daily with food, hay and drinking water. When the
ponies realised the hard food was for them wormers were put into
the feeds.
SWEP is
covering the cost of feeding and caring for the ponies until the
owner(s) can be located. Without SWEP’s intervention and care
the dark bay would have died.

Updated 30th November 2008

The 2008 AGM and Awards Night
was held at the Westward Inn, Lee Mill on Friday 21st November
2008. The
AGM was presented by Maureen Rolls and the minutes will be
available on the website in the near future. However,
Maureen identified the following areas of interest as being
important enough to be put on the website before the minutes are
available:
1.
Cocoa Mulch -
Quote "Yesterday one of our dog agility friends experienced
a tragedy and wanted me to pass a special message along to all
of my dog loving friends and family. Please tell every dog
owner you know.
Over the weekend the doting owner of two
young lab crosses purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in
their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was
advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog
Calypso, decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and
devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was
typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic
in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for
her morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure
and died instantly.
Although the mulch had NO warnings
printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company?
s website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs. Cocoa
Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that "It is
true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa
Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees
(depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs
won't eat it."."
Quote "Cocoa Mulch, which is sold
by Home Depot, Foreman's GardenSupply and other Garden supply
stores, contains a lethal ingredient called "Theobromine". It
is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it
really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die.
Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Just a
word of caution: check what you are using in your gardens and be
aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens.
Theobromine is the
ingredient that is used to make all chocolate especially dark or
baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells
contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine
compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog
that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao
bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours
later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao
bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of
theobromine." Unquote
2. Rescue Remedy Pastilles - Quote "Bach, the
manufacturer of Rescue Remedy have released a Rescue Remedy
Pastille (sweetie) that is sweetened with 'xylitol'.
For those who don't know, xylitol is toxic to dogs. The
original liquid formula is fine for your furry friends as is the
spray but please avoid the Pastille (candy/sweetie) version.
Xylitol is also commonly found in chewing gum (and toothpaste)
so please keep these safely out of your dogs reach as well."
