Volunteering with us is a very rewarding experience and offers the opportunity to broaden your knowledge and get involved with a worthy cause as well as giving something back to the community!
Our volunteers come and help for a variety of reasons; some volunteers come as part of a work placement or to gain experience to help them progress into paid work .Some to give something back to their local community and others just to have fun doing something they enjoy.
We appreciate all the help volunteers can give and offer flexible arrangements. There are various different roles with us as a volunteer and remember you do not have to stick to just one role... you may wish to help at the yard one day, spend time in the office on another and maybe even dedicate a day of your weekend with the fundraising team.
‘Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart’
Elizabeth Andrew
Our office is located right on the edge of Dartmoor in Yelverton Business Park . Our office volunteers are asked to help with a range of different tasks, but as no day is the same here, these tasks can vary!
Typically tasks include:
Writing letters
Scanning documents
Updating pony records
Stuffing envelopes
Assisting the fundraising team preparing for events
Our yard is located in a beautiful area near the Moorland Garden Hotel. This is your opportunity to work closer with the ponies and you will get to see what happens on daily basis when caring for these beautiful animals.
On a daily basis our yard volunteers will do some or all of the following:
Poo picking the fields and schools
Sweeping the yard
Filling hay nets
General cleaning and tidying the yard
Mucking out stables
Forking up the muck heap
Lifting and carrying various odd sized or heavy objects
Emptying, cleaning and filling water buckets
Taking part in or watching training demonstrations
...But there is always the opportunity to handle some of our ponies!
If you like meeting people and enjoy organising events, this is the role made for you! You can either join our Fundraising team on one of the many events they hold throughout the year or organise one of your own...with the full support and a Fundraising Pack provided by us.
Crucial to providing care and support to our Loan pony ‘owners’, Loan Pony Inspectors visit the homes where the ponies are being kept, meet with the people caring for them, complete reports which monitor their well-being and then go on to liaise with the Loan Pony Co-ordinator to ensure that the ponies have a healthy, fruitful life.
We are seeking to recruit Volunteer Loan Pony Inspectors throughout Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.
In general the role includes the following:
Visiting ponies in various locations in your area
Completing home checks for potential new homes
Sending in regular reports to the SWEP office
It will also need you to have equine experience to be able to be able to assess a pony’s welfare competently
This role involves travel and working independently, your own transport would be necessary, but you would receive full support from the team Loan Pony Co-ordinator
We hold Indoor shows throughout the season at Tall Trees Arena in Davidstow, Cornwall. This is a real ‘hands on’ role as you will be an integral part of the running of the show. The role is varied and active, you could be taking show entries, assisting the Judges and Stewards, helping to move jumps around and or even helping in the car park when needed!
